I think you're naming the problem not just about "liberal" or progressive Christianity, but anything "liberal or progressive." It's hard to fit a life down into a set of recitable tenets or soundbytes that conservative Christianity has. Tough to get complexity to look sexy or compelling to those who need hospital corners on their religion to make it look made up properly. I recently read a book by a guy who subscribes to Radical Orthodoxy who was complaining about the way that liberation theologians understood martyrdom. It's not just living life like Jesus and dying for the poor and oppressed that matter; for him, martyrdom had to be conferred by an appropriately recognized institutional community. He (like all these RO guys) need that stability and institutional tidiness. And yes, liberal Christians are just as fundamentalist as conservative ones. But you're right -- we ought not cede the high ground. One of my professors keeps saying, "Don't give any of (the Christian tradition) away," warning those of us who are ready to dispense with a lot of the tradition because it's been co-opted by conservative voices. What can we take and what can we re-imagine in order to give it life and to speak the message of Christianity as we understand it?

I am struck by how much we deny people, in Avery Gordon's words, their "complex personhood," that this woman's entire life is reduced to this one part of her life -- and not even that part of her life, but what people believe about it. I think the gospel presses us to look for complexity in ourselves, in others and in the world. Hence, why parables are great teaching tools -- they are not trite little stories, but rather conversation starters that are supposed to make us think about the complexity of the problem. But yes, you are right, complex personhood only comes out in relationships of openness.
